ABOUT
RISK RETENTION
GROUPS
What is a A Risk Retention Group?
A Risk Retention Group, or "RRG," is a member-owned
business association formed specifically for the purpose of pooling
and sharing
business risks.
Members of an RRG must be in the same or similar business groupings,
i.e. general contractors, sub-contractors and builders. (All members
must be in the construction trade.)
A
key benefit to RRGs is the fact that since each policyholder
is also a member who participates in profits, with each policyholder
having an incentive to engage in proactive loss control to try to
avoid claims. The members can adopt better loss control and quickly
identify other members whose risk management is sub-standard and
either assist them in their risk management or have them take their
insurance business elsewhere.
RRGs must be licensed in at
least one state, which is their “Domiciled
State”. Once licensed, the RRG under the Federal Liability
Risk Retention Act of 1986 to provide liability insurance to its members.
RRGs can underwrite most types of General Liability policies
such as:
- Product Liability Insurance
- General Liability
There are hundreds of Risk Retention Groups operating
throughout the United States with over $1 billion in surplus. The
simple fact is that members of an Risk Retention Groups know their
business better than anyone else. That fact alone often gives
the Risk Retention Groups an underwriting edge over traditional
insurance companies.
